The Scene

Fund raiser for Justice O'Donnell and Judge Cupp, Thursday, March 30, 2006, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Queen City Club 331 E. 4th Street, fee $250/person.

It couldn't have been a more pleasant afternoon. Warm, with a light breeze, and light but steady foot and vehicle traffic.

I was only there from about 5:15 to 6:30, but I counted barely a dozen people going to the fund raiser. Not a very big crowd for a state supreme court justice and a local judge.

On the demurral side, I got one three finger wave (the universal sign for "w"), a one finger sign, and one "go to hell" from a guy in a white corvette. On the affirmation side, I got many beeps and waves, several "I'm with you." and "Keep it up." comments, and a pleasant conversation with the fellow who took sign photos.

Known throughout the town as "republican headquarters," the queen city club is a favorite haunt of the more reactionary, myopic, and paranoid of "haves and the have mores" as president alfred e. neuman bush is said to have described his "base." Well, base they may be, and ironic it may be that they meet at a queen club in the city, but they don't get to have their war party fund raisers without at least a little input from me. BTW, as I was standing there today a truck driver pulled up next to me and said "you've got a lot of nerve standing there with that sign." I said that nobody had bothered me yet, to which he replied "that building is full of a--holes." We parted amicably.

More fun later,

Ray
